The latest release of O3DE, an open source game engine derived from Amazon’s Lumberyard, is version 23.05.
This major release of 2023 is packed with fixes, features, and changes, and is one of only two scheduled releases.
One of the highlights of this release is the Material Canvas, a new node-based visual scripting interface that makes it easy for users to create custom shaders and materials.
O3DE now also has a Material Pipeline, which provides modularity and extensibility to the Atom Renderer.
Other improvements include better O3DE Editor extensibility, support for PhysX 5.1, an updated Animation Editor experience, a paintbrush tool for the Terrain System, and a new Asset Browser experience.
OpenXR support for stereoscopic rendering has also been added, and mobile device performance has been improved with the addition of half-float support for Atom.
Additionally, a new multiplayer demonstration project with source code and assets hosted on GitHub has been launched, showcasing O3DE’s ability to deliver a compelling, feature-rich game while providing significant opportunities for the community to expand and contribute to the game.
